Q4 2023 Nursing Home Staffing Data Released
The Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) nursing home staffing data from the final quarter of calendar year 2023 was posted in late April. As was the case for the last two releases, the figures continue to show an incremental improvement in the percentage of nursing homes that are meeting the State staffing thresholds. Statewide, about 31 percent of homes met all three criteria, about two percentage points better than the prior quarter. However, that means that 7 of 10 homes in the state were still not able to hit the mark. Slightly more than half of non-profit and public homes were in compliance. On the for-profit side, 21 percent of for-profit homes were in compliance.
There continues to be regional variation across the state. The Rochester region had the highest percentage of homes in compliance, with 43 percent of homes meeting the three standards. That is also the region with the highest percentage of non-profit homes. The Northeastern NY region, which extends into the Adirondacks, had the lowest percentage, with less than 20 percent of homes meeting the thresholds.
LeadingAge NY has updated the tool available for members that displays each day of the quarter, indicating compliance or shortage for each day, by profession. That tool, along with tools for prior quarters, can be accessed here.
