Operating Rules Available for Electronic Remittance Advice Enrollment

Medlearn Matters Article MM8223 details the responsibilities of the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) to manage the Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) process. This article is based on Change Request (CR) 8223, which instructs Medicare contractors on the steps they must take to be in compliance with Phase III ERA Enrollment Operating Rule requirements by Oct. 1, 2013. Contractors must have paper-based ERA enrollment forms in compliance with Attachment 1 of CR 8223 no later than July 1, 2014.

The article goes into details as to the responsibilities of the MAC to manage the ERA enrollment and maintenance program. In particular, the article outlines when the provider may or may not be required to submit a new enrollment form.

CMS advises that provider billing staff should be aware of these requirements and maintain this guidance as a reference.
