CMS Proposed Rule on Emergency Preparedness

In the Dec. 27 Federal Register, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule on emergency preparedness for Medicare and Medicaid participating providers and suppliers.  The deadline for submitting comments on the proposed rule is Feb. 25.

CMS is seeking to establish national emergency preparedness requirements to ensure that providers and suppliers "adequately plan for both natural and man-made disasters, and coordinate with federal, state, tribal, regional, and local emergency preparedness systems."  Building on existing rules and regulations, CMS is seeking to preserve variation among providers and suppliers where appropriate, however, the ultimate goal is to establish overall consistent emergency preparedness requirements.  With more consistency in the requirements, CMS hopes that providers and suppliers will be better equipped to coordinate disaster response efforts.
