LeadingAge NY Comments on Proposed Nursing Home Administrator Regulations
LeadingAge NY recently submitted comments on proposed amendments to the regulations governing licensure and professional discipline of nursing home administrators (NHAs). Overall, the association supported the amendments that would streamline and loosen certain licensing requirements. However, the association requested additional regulatory flexibility to facilitate growth in the number of NHAs. The proposed regulations are summarized in a previous article here.
LeadingAge NY's comments included the following recommendations, among others, for additional flexibility in licensure requirements:
- Allow senior executives in the nursing home who have a NHA license, but are not the administrator of record or do not meet all of the experience requirements, to serve as preceptors for administrator-in-training (AIT) internships under certain circumstances.
- Reduce the duration of AIT internships for nursing home executives who are not the director of nursing (e.g., for chief financial officers (CFOs) or directors of social work (DSWs)) or who have degrees other than a master's degree (e.g., juris doctor degree).
- Relax the required coursework for nursing home executives with relevant education and extensive nursing home work experience.
- Allow reciprocity for NHAs licensed in other states.
The association will notify members when changes to the regulations are adopted.
