DOH Seeks Nominations for BENHA Public Representative Seat

The Department of Health (DOH) is seeking nominations for the public representative seat on the Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators (BENHA), the 13-member body which establishes standards for the examination, licensure, and registration of nursing home administrators and standards for the issuance, revocation, and suspension of administrator licenses.

The announcement, issued via email last week, is copied below.

------

The New York State Department of Health (the Department) is asking for nominations for the Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators (BENHA) for the public representative seat. We are especially interested in candidates from the North Country and the Capital District, as we do not have members representing those regions.

This position requires that that any nominees should have a record of public or community service; an interest in nursing homes/nursing home residents; experience (e.g., family member, friend, advocate) with residents of nursing homes or have been a resident of a nursing home; act/acted as a Long-Term Care Ombudsperson; or experience in other areas of value to the Board.

Nominees for public seats should have some of the following characteristics:

  • Record of public or community service
  • Interest in nursing homes and nursing home residents
  • Experience (i.e., family member, friend, advocate) with residents of nursing homes, or resident of nursing home
  • LTC Ombudsperson
  • Experience in areas which can be valuable to the Board

Nominees for public seats should NOT be nursing home staff or employees, currently or in the past five years. This includes both direct operating staff and corporate/executive level staff because of the conflicts of interest from the ongoing employment relationship with a nursing home corporation. Board of Directors members who do not have a financial interest in the nursing home, may be acceptable.

The Board's authority and responsibilities are outlined in the enclosed description. If, after reviewing this information, you would like to nominate a candidate to serve on the Board for this seat, please complete the related Nomination Form and submit it to the Department, as indicated on the form. The Nomination Form includes the statutory criteria for serving on the Board, as well as additional eligibility criteria adopted by the Board.

Please be sure to advise each candidate that you nominate of their nomination. The Department will give each candidate full and careful consideration. Nominations will be accepted through cob on March 2, 2020.

The Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators is critical to the Department's efforts to promote high quality nursing home care in New York State. Board members play a key leadership role. Thank you for participating in this very important process. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact [Megan B. Ryan, Executive Secretary] at (518) 402-1878 or via email at megan.ryan1@health.ny.gov.
