Take Action: Support HUD Funding, Reject Proposed Cuts, and Urge Senators to Join Letter in Support of HUD's Section 202 Program
(May 13, 2025) Congress has begun its process to determine fiscal year (FY) 2026 funding for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and needs to hear from affordable housing stakeholders that sufficient HUD funding to preserve, expand, and improve affordable housing for older adults is critical.
First, let Congress know what we do not support (the White House’s recent request to Congress to cut HUD funding by 43.6 percent) and what we do support (funding to preserve, expand, and improve affordable housing for older adults) for FY 2026 by taking action with this LeadingAge action alert.
Additionally, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) is asking his Senate colleagues to join a letter to Senate HUD appropriations leaders for strong FY 2026 funding for HUD’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly and Section 811 Housing for Persons with Disabilities programs, and advocates should urge their senators to join the letter.
The letter asks for full funding for contract renewals for the Section 202 Housing for the Elderly program, an additional $600 million for capital advances and operating subsidies for 2,000 new 202 homes to meet increasing need, $50 million to fund a new Older Adult Special Purpose Housing Choice Voucher program for 5,000 older adults, $10 million in Rental Assistance Demonstration conversion subsidy to support preservation of 3,000 Section 202 homes, and full funding to renew and expand Service Coordination in 202 housing.
LeadingAge worked with Senator Reed’s office on the letter and is asking every Senate office to sign on. The deadline for adding support to the letter is May 15th. Read the letter here, and reach out to the senators for NY, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, with this link where Senate offices (only) can view and join the letter.
