HUD Urges Owners to Remind Residents About Medicaid Renewal Paperwork

In an Aug. 21st email, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reminded multifamily owners and operators that states have been recertifying their Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) rolls for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that this information will be used to decide which individuals still qualify for Medicaid. That means it will be essential for enrollees to update their contact information and take action to renew their health insurance this year.

HUD suggests that owners remind residents to make sure that they are checking their mail for a letter about whether they must complete a renewal verification form, and to complete the renewal form right away if they got one. NYS, which resumed eligibility reviews and renewals for people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP in spring 2023, recommends that enrollees make sure that their address is up to date with NY State of Health, the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), or the Local Department of Social Services where they enrolled. When it is time to renew, NY State of Health or the local office will send a letter or renewal packet to the address on file including instructions to renew coverage and a deadline for response.

Find more resources, including Frequently Asked Questions and information on an upcoming “Renewing Your NYS Medicaid Coverage: Member Webinar,” on the State’s Medicaid website.
