HUD Awards $109 Million in Grants to Help Older Adults Age in Place

(Jan. 14, 2025) The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $109 million in grants to 67 state governments, municipalities, and non-profit organizations to support older adult homeowners and renters with low incomes as they age in place, including nearly $6 million awarded to entities in NYS. Provided through HUD’s Older Adults Home Modification Program (OAHMP), these grants allow low-income older adults to stay in their homes through low-cost home modifications that will reduce their risk of falling.

Examples of these home modifications include installation of grab bars, railings, and lever-handled doorknobs and faucets, as well as the installation of adaptive equipment such as temporary ramps, tub and shower transfer benches, handheld shower heads, raised toilet seats, risers for chairs and sofas, and non-slip strips for tubs and showers or stairs.

Maintenance and repair projects funded under the program are based on findings in the home by certified occupational therapists and other professionals of fall and other housing hazards that could result in the older adults not being able to continue living at home. The OAHMP model also encourages a person-centered approach that motivates and supports older adults as they identify their goals and learn to function safely in their homes.
