ACTION ALERT: Protect and Expand Affordable Senior Housing Funding

On July 20th, U.S. Senate appropriators approved a proposal to “flat-fund” the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for fiscal year (FY) 2024. Because of rising costs and increasing demand for affordable housing, “flat-funding” – or maintaining funding at current levels – effectively results in a cut to the agency.

In June, the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations approved FY 2024 funding allocations at levels well below FY 2022 for most subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (THUD). Both congressional chambers’ proposals fall below the President’s FY 2024 Budget Request for HUD of $73.3 billion and could have devastating impacts on older adults who rely on access to affordable housing and the HUD Service Coordinator program.

Next, the Senate and House Committee proposals will be considered by each full chamber before Congress begins its reconciliation process. Take action now and urge members of Congress to support full funding for affordable senior housing in the final FY 2024 budget.
