Information/Resources on Potential LIRR Strike

(Sept. 15, 2025) LeadingAge NY members in the Long Island, NYC, and Hudson Valley regions should be aware of a potential Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) labor action that could occur as early as Thurs., Sept. 18th at 12:01 a.m. At this time, according to our emergency preparedness partners, five separate unions representing 3,400 employees (49% of the LIRR workforce) are currently in negotiations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Early reports suggest that a strike is likely, which would mean a shutdown of service for the approximately 300,000 riders served by the LIRR daily, including health care workers.

For your planning purposes, we encourage you to review the MTA’s contingency plan, which includes limited shuttle bus service on weekdays to subway locations (peak hours only, 4:30-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.), as well as additional resources on the 511NY Rideshare website. Our partners report that advocacy is underway to prioritize health care workers in the shuttle bus operation, and that NYC is also exploring other options such as suspending alternate side parking.

Please note that services not affected by this potential strike include:

  • Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) Buses, MTA Express Buses
  • Amtrak, Metro-North, NJ Transit, MTA Subways and Buses
  • Ferry services including NY Waterway and Seastreak

More information should be available in the coming days. We will keep members apprised of any developments.
