Trump Administration Shortens Haitian and Venezuelan Temporary Protected Status
(March 4, 2025) The Trump administration last week reduced the duration of temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants, imposing a new expiration date of Aug. 3, 2025. Earlier in the year, the administration reduced the timeframe of the TPS designations for Venezuelans, which will result in the loss of TPS status on April 7, 2025 for individuals who received TPS under the 2023 Venezuela designation and on Sept. 10, 2025 for individuals who received TPS under the 2021 Venezuela designation.
Individuals with TPS are authorized to work in the U.S. and are protected from deportation, but these benefits end when the country’s TPS designation ends. As of September 2024, the Congressional Research Service estimated that 504,000 Venezuelans and 260,000 Haitians in the U.S. were covered by TPS. In addition to Haiti and Venezuela, TPS designations currently exist for 15 other countries, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Many health care providers employ individuals with TPS, raising concerns that the termination of TPS for these individuals may deepen the health care workforce shortage.
