Updates on Trump Administration Immigration Actions

(April 15, 2025) A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration's early terminations of humanitarian parole for Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan (CHNV) nationals on April 14th and certified a class of all individuals in the U.S. who have received a grant of parole that is subject to the CHNV humanitarian parole program. The administration had issued a Federal Register notice terminating CHNV humanitarian parole as of April 24th. The decision in the case, Svitlana Doe v. Noem, stayed the revocations of parole pending further court order. The case was filed on behalf of humanitarian parole beneficiaries, and their U.S. sponsors, who received parole through various programs including Uniting for Ukraine, Operation Allies Welcome (Afghanistan), Central American Minors Parole, Family Reunification Parole, Military Parole-in-Place, as well as the CHNV program.

In another development, according to reporting by news outlets, the Trump administration is terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Afghanistan and Cameroon. As previously reported, TPS allows eligible foreign nationals to live and work in the U.S. when conditions in their home country are unsafe. The Afghanistan designation will expire on May 20, 2025 for roughly 14,600 Afghans, and the Cameroon designation will expire on June 7, 2025 for an estimated 7,900 Cameroonians.

The decision not to redesignate TPS for these two countries will likely be challenged in court, like similar revocations for Haitians and Venezuelans. LeadingAge National and LeadingAge NY will update members as needed.
