DataPoint: State Health Workforce Trends
(June 25, 2024) Based on a new report, 94 percent of residential health facilities in NYS reported difficulty hiring aides, while 97 percent found it hard to hire an experienced registered nurse (RN). It shows that health care represents 13.5 percent of jobs in the state, up from 12.3 percent in 2010, and that the home care workforce increased by 26 percent, or 61,000 workers, between 2018 and 2022. The report, “The Health Care Workforce in New York State: Trends in the Supply of and Demand for Health Care Workers,” was released by the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany. It provides information drawn from a variety of data sources to describe and analyze NYS's health workforce, as well as invaluable insight regarding nursing home workforce metrics, including the percentage of respondents who indicated recruitment/retention difficulties in NYS, reasons for recruitment difficulties, and the workforce evolution of licensed individuals in various health care professions in NYS.
