DataPoint: Nursing Home Survey Deficiency Counts

Over 90 percent of nursing homes statewide have been surveyed under the new survey process, which began Nov. 28, 2017. Based on data analyzed by LeadingAge NY, the top 10 most frequently cited deficiencies accounted for over 41 percent of all deficiencies through June 2019. The single most frequently cited deficiency has been F-880 (Provide and implement an infection prevention and control program), followed by F-656 (Develop and implement a complete care plan that meets all the resident's needs, with timetables and actions that can be measured), each representing more than 7 percent of all citations. Statewide, the median number of deficiencies per home was four. Meanwhile, the highest median number of deficiencies per home was in the Northeastern region (nine). Nearly 12 percent of homes surveyed under the new survey process were deficiency-free, while fewer than 2 percent of homes were deficiency-free in the Rochester and Northeastern regions.
