DataPoint: Nursing Home Medicaid Case Mix Index

The median statewide Case Mix Index (CMI) of Medicaid nursing home residents was 1.11 based on January 2016 assessments. The figure was the same in July 2015, but had increased from January 2015, when the statewide median stood at 1.08.

The largest regional changes from January 2015 to January 2016 were observed in the Buffalo region, where the CMI grew to 1.17 in January 2016, up from 1.11 a year earlier. The New York City median CMI rose from 1.15 to 1.19 during that time period. For-profit homes reported a median CMI of 1.19 at the start of 2016, while not-for-profit homes reported a median CMI of 1.03. Figures are prior to any MDS audits or constraints.

LeadingAge NY has updated the CMI benchmarking tool that allows members to benchmark their home’s CMI figures to various peer groups. The tool is available here.
