DataPoint: Medicare Part D

Enrollment in Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans (stand alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) and Medicare Advantage with Part D) has increased from 22.5 to 39.2 million across the U.S.  In New York State, 76 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Part D, a slightly higher proportion than the 71 percent national figure.  Nationally, 30 percent of enrollees receive the low income subsidy compared to 35 percent in New York. Representing 45 percent of all Part D enrollees, Medicaid Advantage plans with Part D coverage are more popular in New York State than in the rest of the nation where they comprise 38 percent of Part D enrollment.  The national Medicare Part D market continues to be dominated by United Health Group which boasts 21 percent of all Part D enrollees in 2015 with Humana in second place with 18 percent.

These figures and more are available in a new report, Medicare Part D at Ten Years: The 2015 Marketplace and Key Trends, published this month by Georgetown University and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
