DataPoint: Medicare and Medicaid at 50

Nationwide, Medicare and Medicaid cover healthcare for 31 percent of Americans and represent almost one quarter of all federal spending (Medicare 14 percent, Medicaid 9 percent).    The Kaiser Family Foundation and the Journal of the American Medical Association issued infographics on the scope of the health programs and trends going forward showing Medicare beneficiaries increasing from 48 million in 2010 to 64 million in 2020.  Through 2023, per-person annual spending growth in Medicaid is projected to be 4.1 percent with Medicare growth projected at 3.4 percent.    The annual growth projection is higher for private insurance at 4.8 percent.    The data slides are also available here in larger format.
