DataPoint: LTC Use Rates by State

New Yorkers utilize adult day health and nursing home care more than the national average while reliance on hospice and residential care communities is greater in most other states than in New York.  Based on 2012 figures (2011 for hospice and home care), there were 31 nursing home residents for every 1,000 individuals 65 or older in New York State.  Nationwide, the figure was 26.  However, for every 1,000 seniors in the U.S., 15 lived in residential care communities while only 9 per 1,000 New York seniors did.  The state's home care use rate of 94 mirrored the national use rate while the use rate of hospice services (15 per 1,000 seniors) was about half that of the nationwide rate.  Comparative figures for all states are available in Appendix B of a report titled Long Term Care Services in the U.S.:  2013 Overview issued by the National Center for Health Statistics.
