DataPoint: Lower Acuity Nursing Home Residents

In half of the counties in the State, nursing home residents assessed into a Physical RUG-III category (PA, PB, PC, PD, PE) comprise 25 percent or more of the nursing home population. Based on January 2014 all-payer nursing home census figures, the Capital Region reports that 29 percent of nursing home residents fall into these categories, with the Rochester Region coming in second highest at 26 percent. New York City homes report the lowest percentage of lower acuity residents with only 10 percent of residents scoring in physical RUG categories. The rate in Long Island is 12 percent. Statewide, 16 percent of residents are assessed into Physical RUGs while 2.5 percent are in the lowest PA/PB categories. Counts of residents assessed into selected lower acuity RUG-III categories, by county, is available here.
