DataPoint: Healthcare Employment in New York State

According to a recently released report from the Office of the New York State Comptroller, healthcare employment rose to over 1.2 million in 2017, increasing 18 percent since 2007 and more than doubling overall employment growth. Without healthcare employment growth, overall private employment in upstate New York would have declined in the past decade. The healthcare industry represented 13.5 percent of New York State’s employment, of which 21.9 percent is represented by nursing and residential care facilities. From 2007 to 2017, consumer healthcare spending in New York State increased from 15.6 percent of overall spending to 16.1 percent.

New York State’s healthcare industry accounts for close to $71 billion in wages. In 2017, the average annual wage of healthcare employees in New York State was $57,200, which was higher than the national average of $56,100. In the past decade, healthcare wages increased 22.3 percent statewide and 26.5 percent nationwide.
