DataPoint: Health Care Spending by State

Despite New York State’s above-average health care spending, total nursing home all payer average annual spending growth (3.7 percent) was slow when compared to national averages. The national average annual increase for all payer health care expenditure for nursing home care was 5 percent during the 1991-2014 evaluation period. New York's 3.7 percent spending increase ranks 46th nationally. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released updated National Health Expenditure Data in June 2017 which included state-specific detail through 2014, as well as national projections through 2025.

The state's nursing home spending growth proved to be typically slower than the national average for Medicaid and private insurance, although Medicare per enrollee nursing home spending (12.7 percent) was higher than the national average of 11.3 percent.
