DataPoint: ACA Medicaid Expansion

Nationally, Medicaid and Child Health Plus (CHIP) enrollment has increased by 30 percent since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) expansions were enacted. Comparisons by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) of October 2016 Medicaid enrollment to 2013 enrollment show 15 states with enrollment increases higher than 40 percent. Not surprisingly, the 31 states participating in the ACA Medicaid expansion showed higher increases than those not participating. Although there was significant Medicaid enrollment growth in some non-participating states such as Florida, most (e.g., Texas, Wisconsin, and Virginia) saw single-digit increases. Some participating states like California, Oregon, and Washington saw increases close to 60 percent. The data tables are available on the KFF State Health Facts website here.
