DataPoint: ACF Occupancy Tracker
(June 11, 2024) LeadingAge NY has developed a streamlined way for members to compare their adult care facility (ACF) occupancy with that of other facilities and regional medians over time. The ACF occupancy dashboard enables users to visualize and compare their facility-specific occupancy rates with the Department of Health (DOH) region of their choosing, any ACF located in NYS, or both. Occupancy rates were calculated by sourcing ACFs' census data reported through the daily Health Electronic Response Data System (HERDS) survey and dividing it by each facility’s certified bed count. Regional occupancy rates reflect the monthly median rate for each DOH region. The data are updated each month. If the selected ACF has an occupancy rate of 0 percent in any given month, it is because no data was submitted or the facility has closed.
ACF occupancy continues to recover slowly and is approaching pre-pandemic levels. Statewide median occupancy for May 2024 was 74.7 percent, up from 71.8 percent one year ago. Median occupancy in most upstate regions is near 80 percent, while the Downstate median is 73.9 percent. The Troy region saw the largest change during the last 12 months, with the median increasing from 76.1 percent to 80.0 percent. Note that the available data does not make it possible to discern how much the occupancy rate is influenced by beds that may be offline due to staffing shortages or other considerations.
