Nursing Homes Should Use New Definition of “Up to Date” in NHSN Reporting

As of the reporting week ending Oct. 1st, nursing home residents and health care personnel (HCP) are considered up to date with their COVID vaccinations if they have received a 2023-2024 updated COVID vaccine or if they have received a bivalent COVID vaccine within the last two months. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes and expects that most residents and HCP will not be up to date under this new definition and that this will be reflected in weekly National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) COVID data reporting.

Facilities should report that zero residents and HCP are up to date until individuals receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID vaccine. More information on the updated definition and examples are available here. The slides from a CDC training webinar on the changes are here.
