NHSN Reminds Nursing Homes of Terminology Update

(Jan. 21, 2025) The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is reminding nursing home providers that with the start of a new reporting quarter, the definition of what it means to be "up to date" with COVID-19 vaccination for purposes of weekly NHSN reporting has been updated. As of Dec. 30, 2024, to be considered up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, individuals aged 65 years and older need to have received two doses of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine or have received one dose in the past six months. Because the 2024-2025 vaccine only became available in September 2024 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that doses be spaced six months apart, most nursing home residents who have received one dose of the 2024-2025 vaccine will remain up to date until March. The most current NHSN guide that details the reporting definitions is available here.
