Next PBJ Reporting Deadline Feb. 14th
We remind nursing home members that staffing data for the quarter ending on Dec. 31st must be submitted through the Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) system by Thurs., Feb. 14th. PBJ submissions are used to calculate quarterly staffing ratings used in the Five-Star Quality Rating System. Only data that are successfully submitted by the deadline are used in determining ratings.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) strongly recommends that providers upload their data in advance of the deadline to avoid potential system slowdowns. CMS contractors Granite Dolphin and Myers and Stauffer are conducting audits of PBJ submissions. Failure to respond to an audit notice or provide the requested documentation may negatively impact staffing star ratings as well.
When finalizing data for submission, members should take special care to ensure that meal break time is being excluded as required for each employee (even when a meal break is not taken) and that they are meeting, and accurately reflecting in their reporting, the requirement to have an RN on site for at least eight consecutive hours, seven days per week. In addition, providers should ensure that MDS assessments, specifically discharge assessments, are submitted in a timely manner to ensure that the home’s daily census, which CMS uses to compute staffing, is accurate.
