March is National Social Work Month!

The National Association of Social Workers has chosen the 2014 Social Work Month theme:  “All People Matter.” NASW selected this year’s theme and logo to help raise awareness about the American social work profession’s 116-year commitment to improving social conditions and quality of life opportunities for everyone.  According to the National Association of Social Workers, this theme was selected because "social workers across the globe believe that all people have dignity and deserve respect."

NASW introduced National Professional Social Work Month for the first time in March 1963 in order to encourage public support and interest in social work.  The White House officially recognized March as National Professional Social Work Month in 1984.  A joint resolution was introduced by Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) declaring March 1984 as National Social Work Month. The resolution was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

For LeadingAge NY members, social workers are essential members of care teams, ensuring the quality of care and quality of life for patients and residents.  Whether it is working directly with patients/residents and their families in the community or a health care setting, or educating and training staff, social workers lead organizations in helping connect and celebrate the lives of the people they serve and promote person-centered planning and resident-centered care.
