Emergency Preparedness and Life Safety Code Training Opportunities

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed a new online Emergency Preparedness course. The course is required of all surveyors who complete Emergency Preparedness (EP) or Life Safety Code (LSC) surveys and is suggested for all other surveyors.

In New York State, the Office of Primary Care and Health Systems Management (OPCHSM) and the Office of Health Emergency Preparedness (OHEP), with sponsorship of New York State long term care associations, will offer a series of statewide technical assistance workshops to all nursing homes, covering CMS’ EP and LSC regulatory requirements. These workshops are appropriate for nursing home staff and health system EP and LSC managers with responsibility for such regulatory compliance. The sessions will take place statewide in October and November.

LeadingAge NY is sponsoring a full-day workshop for Western Region providers on Nov. 3, 2017 at The Westin in Buffalo.

Workshop Content: The free workshops will provide training and discuss with providers ongoing preparedness activities and resources already available to nursing homes that can help them be prepared for disasters and be compliant with the new regulatory requirements beginning in November 2017.

Each full-day training session will include Part One about EP, while Part Two will cover Life Safety Code, Fire Safety, and Certificate of Need requests. Sessions are free, and lunch will be provided.

Target Audience: Individuals who are responsible for regulatory compliance for EP and LSC requirements in nursing homes. Examples of such roles are Administrator; Director of Nursing; Plant Manager; Director, Safety and Security; and Emergency Response Coordinator for the facility. A maximum of two staff should attend due to limited seating.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): CEUs have been requested for nursing home administrators attending the in-person session.

Registration: Interested parties must pre-register through the Department of Health (DOH) Learning Management System (LMS).

More Information: DOH’s official notice of these workshops is attached and includes workshop faculty, a full workshop schedule, and detailed instructions on registering for the workshop via the LMS.
