DOH to Host UTI Webinar on Aug. 27th
(Aug. 26, 2025) On Wed., Aug. 27th, the Department of Health and the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization will host a webinar on urinary tract infections (UTIs) in long-term care settings. The webinar will take place from 12-1 p.m.
Participants will learn to:
- Differentiate between asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and a symptomatic UTI in long-term care residents by identifying specific clinical indicators and recognizing non-specific symptoms that do not warrant antimicrobial treatment.
- Apply evidence-based, non-antibiotic strategies for UTI prevention, including proper incontinence care, catheter avoidance, and the use of topical vaginal estrogen in postmenopausal women.
- Describe the pathophysiology of common UTIs by explaining the role of bacterial adhesion and the mechanisms by which E. coli and Proteus mirabilis cause infection.
- Utilize the Loeb criteria to determine when it is appropriate to initiate antibiotics for a suspected UTI in both catheterized and non-catheterized residents.
- Implement core prevention strategies to reduce the risk of Catheter-Associated UTIs (CAUTIs), focusing on aseptic insertion, proper maintenance, and the prompt removal of unnecessary catheters.
Pre-registration is available here.
