DOH Hosting Webinar on Emerging Multidrug-Resistant Organism

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed recent cases of C. auris in 20 clinical patient isolates reported by facilities in the New York City metropolitan area. In a phone conference with state associations, the Department of Health (DOH) mentioned that health facility labs do not currently have the ability to identify this organism.

Wadsworth lab is currently the only lab able to confirm cases of C. auris in the state. The fungal organism is resistant to most commonly-used antifungals. Residents with positive cultures do not need to be isolated in a private room, but a private room would be preferred. Standard and contact precautions should be maintained for anyone suspected to be colonized. Disinfecting of areas should be performed with an EPA-registered product that has a fungal claim or fungicidal properties.

The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Healthcare-Associated Infections (BHAI) will offer a webinar addressing the emergence, current status, and prevention and control of C. auris in the state.

Healthcare facility staff are strongly encouraged to attend, especially those in the New York City metropolitan area. The webinar will be presented on Thurs., Dec. 29th from 12-1 p.m. and will be repeated on Wed., Jan. 4th from 12-1 p.m.
