CMS issues ICD-10 Quick Start Guide

Many support and consulting organizations are putting out information on ICD-10 to assist providers in the upcoming conversion.  CMS has offered opportunities to test claim submission with the new classification system prior to the impending October 1, 2015 implementation date.  Still, even with so much information flowing in emails and faxes, providers are confused as to what direction to turn first.  This publication by CMS, the ICD-10 Quick Start Guide, provides five numbered steps with links to additional resources that may be helpful.

1. Make a plan - including access to codes and coding books

2. Train your staff - including suggestions for levels of training and resources

3. Update your processes - focusing on documentation systems

4. Vendors and health plans - ensuring others you work with are ready also

5. Testing systems and processes - ways to submit sample claims to verify your system is ready to go.
