CMS Releases Quality and Financial Performance Results for Medicare ACOs
CMS released financial and quality performance results for the second year of performance of the Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and the first year of performance for the Medicare Shared Savings Program ACOs. Overall, the ACOs generated $372 million in Medicare savings in 2013 and qualified for shared savings payments of $445 million. Both types of ACOs improved their performance on quality measures and patient experience measures.
Nationwide, more than 360 Medicare ACOs are serving 5.3 million Medicare beneficiaries. The performance results included sixteen ACOs serving beneficiaries in New York State. The Medicare Shared Savings Program ACOs serving New York beneficiaries generated approximately $68 million in program savings. Results for individual Pioneer ACOs were not released, but New York's Pioneer ACO, the Montefiore ACO, reports that it generated savings of 7 percent.
