LeadingAge NY Brings Its Affordable Housing Summit Back to Syracuse

(May 13, 2025) On May 5th and 6th, LeadingAge NY once again hosted its annual Affordable Housing Summit (formerly known as the Housing Professionals Conference) for affordable, subsidized, and supportive housing providers serving older adults to learn and network.

For the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returned to Syracuse, where more than 100 attendees heard from expert speakers on the latest trends and issues affecting their residents and properties and had the opportunity to meet with sponsors – Gallagher Insurance, Risk Management and Consulting and Nascentia Health – to discuss opportunities to save on property insurance and to connect residents with at-home services and Managed Long-Term Care plans.

Juliana Bilowich, LeadingAge’s Senior Director of Housing Operations and Policy, kicked off the programming with an overview of how systemic changes at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and across federal programs might translate into tangible impacts on senior housing residents, members’ ability to serve them, and the future of mission-aligned affordable housing for older Americans.

Over the course of two days, other expert speakers shared their insights into the latest HUD inspection protocols as well as pressing issues including how to address bullying by and among residents and staff, how to identify and combat threats to resident and staff physical and mental well-being, spotting and stopping scams, supporting independent living residents in end-of-life planning and preparations, and best practices for resident screening and required lease disclosures.

Attendees are encouraged to submit their feedback on the Affordable Housing Summit using the evaluation tools available through the conference app, or, alternatively, are welcome to reach out to Annalyse Komoroske Denio, Senior Policy Analyst for LeadingAge NY, with their comments to help improve next year’s Summit.

Hoping to hear more about the current landscape of senior housing in NYS? Join Annalyse Komoroske Denio at LeadingAge NY’s Annual Conference and Exposition in Saratoga Springs for a policy update on Wed., May 21st.
