Palliative Care Initiative Seeks LTC and Stakeholder Feedback
LeadingAge NY is on an advisory council of an initiative led by the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of NYS (HPCANYS) to expand community-based palliative care for children, adults, older adults, and their caregivers in NYS. HPCANYS is looking for interested stakeholders in long term care and home care to share their expertise and knowledge as they develop a draft proposal and recommendations to support the sustainability and scalability of palliative care services for NYS Medicaid members.
In an effort to discuss and share information and expertise, HPCANYS invites members and the public to a symposium on Wed., May 22, 2024 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the University at Albany, State University of NY (SUNY). We encourage appropriate staff of LeadingAge NY member organizations to participate in this opportunity. Members can reach out to Meg Everett at meverett@leadingageny.org to learn more about ways they can engage.
Palliative care, when done well, is of high value to people with serious illness, their loved ones, and the professionals who treat them. Importantly, in addition to the improvement in quality of care, health outcomes, and overall satisfaction with care, palliative care is cost effective, rendering it a comprehensive win for any community. Palliative care, therefore, could significantly improve how we in NY care for some of our most complex and seriously ill adults, children, and their caregivers.
Join us and provide your feedback on these policy recommendations to support palliative care for NYS Medicaid members.
The Steering Committee leading this initiative is soliciting community input on their proposed policy recommendations. Your opinions and feedback can influence how recommendations regarding palliative care are designed and implemented, and we hope that you will participate. There will be seven major topic areas of focus for small group discussions led by facilitators:
- Eligibility – eligible conditions
- Health Equity – addressing the medical, behavioral, and social needs of diverse and underserved populations
- Services – disciplines, types, and frequency of palliative care services
- Provider Training and Capabilities
- Payments – reimbursement model and dual eligible considerations
- Quality – monitoring outcomes and performance measures
- Pediatrics – special considerations for the pediatric population
This event will provide numerous opportunities for participants to offer feedback.
We know that many LeadingAge NY members deliver or partner to provide palliative care as part of their long term care services, through community-based care, or through case management with providers. Your experience and knowledge in this field will be valuable in this effort.
Please feel free to share this information with appropriate staff within your organizations and other interested colleagues.
