HHS Office of Inspector General Work Plan for 2014

The 2014 OIG Work Plan identifies several program areas that will be under review. They include:

  • Hospice - A new area of review is hospice utilization of Medicare beneficiaries in Assisted Living Facilities (ACFs). The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) has determined ACF residents have the longest length of stay in hospice care which needs further monitoring and evaluation.
  • Home Health Services - Review of compliance with aspects of the home health prospective payment system, including documentation to support claims paid by Medicare. Another area under review is the extent Home Health Agencies (HHAs) have complying with state requirements for conducting criminal records checks on applicants and employees.
  • Medical Equipment and Supplies - Another new area of review: Competitive bidding for diabetes testing supplies.
  • Equipment and Supplies - Another new area: A review of Medicare Part B payment for power mobility devices to determine whether the Medicare requirements for face-to-face examinations were met.
  • Home Health Services and Other Community-Based Care - Review of HHA claims to State Medicaid programs to determine whether the billing providers met the application criteria to provide services to Medicaid beneficiaries. OIG will also be reviewing the health-screening records of Medicaid HHA health care workers to determine if they are meeting federal and state requirements.
