CMS issues National Health Expenditure Projections 2011-2021

CMS is reporting that national health spending in 2011 reached $2.7 trillion, growing at the same rate of 3.9 percent observed in 2010.  CMS attributes this low rate of estimated growth in overall health spending to the lingering effects of the recent recession.  Similar growth in nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 3.9 percent has maintained the estimated health share of GDP at 17.9 percent.   For 2011, spending on nursing homes and continuing care retirement communities grew at an estimated 5.8 percent and home health care grew at an estimated 3.9 percent.

CMS is also projecting for 2012 and 2013 an overall increase in health expenditures of 4.2 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively.  For nursing homes and CCRCs, the projected growth is 5.8 percent for 2012 and a dramatic decrease in growth of 2.6 percent in 2013.  During this same period, home health expenditures are projected to show an increase of 6.4 percent in 2012 and 5.7 percent in 2013.
