SSI Benefits to Be Paid Out Differently in October
Individuals that receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see a change in how their benefits are paid out starting Oct. 1, 2014. In an effort to achieve savings, New York will begin to administer the state portion of the benefit, which had previously been administered federally at a cost to the state. For the beneficiary, this means that the federal and the state benefits will be paid in two separate payments, as opposed to one. Recipients will continue to receive the benefit in the same manner they currently do, including direct deposit and deposits into Direct Express accounts. SSI recipients will receive notification of the change in Aug. 2014. LeadingAge New York is working with the Office for Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) to provide members with additional information to help ensure that providers can assist the SSI recipients they serve though this change.
