Concerned About an Older Driver in Your Community?
For many, driving is critical to remaining independent and difficult to give up. Sometimes seniors are reluctant to admit or may be unaware that their driving has become less safe due to the frailties of aging. Ideally, a concerned loved one or service provider can have an honest conversation with the individual to discuss concerns and help find alternate ways to access the community. Unfortunately, this approach is not always successful.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has a form to report concerns about a citizen’s driving, which can be accessed here. If the individual you are concerned about is a consumer of your program, it is recommended that you document your efforts to address safety concerns with the individual, as well as attempt to assist the individual in otherwise accessing the community.
