Hultquist Place Resident Competes in Prevention Magazine’s Virtual 5K to Maintain Health During COVID

As COVID-19 began sweeping across the country in the beginning of 2020, millions of people were confined to their homes, especially seniors. The abrupt halt of group physical activities left many individuals stranded and confused without the exercise routines they had come to rely on. Judy Cowles, an 83-year-old resident of the Hultquist Place Assisted Living Program, decided to use the pandemic to take her existing exercise routine to new heights by competing in her first-ever 5K run/walk competition on Oct. 2, 2021.

In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Jewish Senior Life is recognizing Project SEARCH®, a collaboration with Heritage Christian Services, now entering its fourth year. NDEAM is held each October to commemorate the various contributions of people with disabilities to America’s workplaces and economy. Project SEARCH® is a nationally recognized pre-employment program that provides individuals with the skills and experience needed to gain and maintain meaningful employment at Jewish Senior Life or elsewhere in the community.

The three-year fellowship is funded by a recently awarded grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dr. Bloom will lead several key pieces of work to help residents link their past with the future – to become more connected to their family members, staff and the wider world.
