Governor Hochul Convenes Extraordinary Session to Address Gun Safety
On June 30th, Governor Hochul convened an extraordinary session of the New York State Legislature to pass new gun safety legislation in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen. The extraordinary session, spanning two days, also included the passage of an Equality Amendment, which starts the process to incorporate the reproductive rights formerly guaranteed by Roe v. Wade into the state’s constitution. Legislators completed their work on these two specific issues on July 1st and then returned to their districts.
Notably for LeadingAge NY members, the new firearms legislation (A.41001/S.51001) makes changes to laws pertaining to the “concealed carry” of firearms and identifies sensitive locations where it is prohibited to carry a concealed weapon. Among these sensitive locations are health care facilities such as nursing homes and adult care facilities (ACFs). The implications of these changes in state law and their impact on other member types will require further analysis, which LeadingAge NY will provide over the coming weeks. The bill was signed into law by the Governor on July 1st.
