Continuing Education for Social Workers

Last week, Gov. Cuomo signed into law legislation to ensure continued competency by requiring practicing licensed master social workers and licensed clinical social workers to complete continuing education. This law is mandatory and requires 36 hours of continuing education credits over a three-year period. New license holders are exempt until after the first license renewal. In addition, accumulating continuing education hours before the effective date is not likely to be counted. This law will take effect Jan. 1, 2015 and is contingent on the state education department's ability to authorize the steps outlined in the law prior to Jan. 1, 2015.
