CMS Reminds Nursing Homes of Residents' Right to Vote

(Oct. 8, 2024) The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a memo on Sept. 26th, reminding nursing homes of their duty to guarantee that residents are able to exercise their right to vote. Nursing home facilities should ensure that their residents can vote without interference, coercion, or discrimination by helping residents register to vote, and access ballots. Facilities are responsible for protecting access to mail-in ballots, submitting the ballots in a timely manner, and providing transportation to polling places.

Voting in the presidential election is a fundamental right shared by all citizens. Nursing homes must make sure residents have equal opportunities to fully participate in this democratic process.
