Calling All Advocates: Urge Congress to Oppose House Tax Reform Bill
Last week, lawmakers in the House of Representatives introduced major tax reform legislation (H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act). The Ways and Means Committee began consideration of the bill on Tuesday, with a committee vote expected as soon as Thursday.
H.R. 1 contains two provisions of serious concern to aging services providers and the individuals they serve:
- Elimination of the tax deduction for medical expenses; and
- Elimination of tax-exempt financing for the development and preservation of affordable senior housing and CCRCs.
This legislation would be disastrous for seniors, many of whom have higher-than-average medical costs and live in affordable housing.
LeadingAge NY is asking you to call your representatives TODAY and urge them to protect the medical expense deduction and tax-exempt financing for senior housing and CCRCs. If you live or work in a district represented by a Republican representative, your participation in this effort is even more important. Let your lawmakers know that New York’s seniors need this, and that protecting these tax provisions is the right thing to do.
Thank you for taking action to stop this harmful bill.
