2024 NYS Election Results

(Nov. 9, 2024) Federal and state general elections were held on Nov. 5th, and several seats in the State Legislature that were up for grabs have now been filled. In 2025, the State Legislature will welcome several new representatives from both parties. However, as of this writing, there are still several races for the Legislature – and for the U.S. Congress – that are too close to call, and the outcomes may remain uncertain for a few days due to the number of uncounted absentee ballots.

For the last several years, NY Democrats have maintained a supermajority in both houses of the State Legislature. The results of this year’s elections are nearly final, and while the Assembly Democrats barely maintained their supermajority status by winning 100 out of 150 seats, Republicans gained enough seats in the Senate to reduce the Democratic majority. To protect their supermajority in the Senate, the Democrats must claim at least 42 out of the 63 seats. As of this writing, the Democrats have secured at least 40 seats, losing their supermajority by a narrow margin.

While the Democrats still lead in the State Legislature, the effects of this year’s elections nationwide have shifted party control of Congress in favor of the Republicans. This change in power is sure to significantly impact aging services all over the country. Please join LeadingAge National on Mon., Nov. 18th at 3:30 p.m. ET for a special 2024 Election Edition of its National Policy Pulse call to learn more about its 2024 year-end priorities and the potential impact of the elections on aging services policy. Register for the National Policy Pulse call here.

All LeadingAge NY members are encouraged to check their state and congressional election outcomes and engage with newly elected officials! If you know that you will have a new state legislator or congressperson in January, take the time to send them a note or letter over the next few months to introduce yourself, and set up a time to meet if you have not already done so. Click here to visit the NYS Board of Elections website to see the results from State Assembly, State Senate, and congressional races. Click here to confirm your Senate and Assembly district location.

Please find below a chart illustrating the outcomes of several state legislative races that LeadingAge NY was watching this election season. For districts where there was a change in representation, but the seat was NOT “open,” this suggests that it was a tight race with a noteworthy outcome. You will also notice that many incumbents ultimately held their seats, and there was a mix of wins and losses for Republicans and Democrats alike in NY.

Regardless of whether your districts are reflected above, all members should be aware of who their district legislators are. Again, for members whose legislators have changed, we encourage you to contact the winning candidates to express your organization's mission, services, and challenges. LeadingAge NY is happy to assist members in organizing meetings or local visits with legislators. Let us know about your advocacy activities and how we can help!

Consider Contributing to the LeadingAge NY PAC!

An easy way to ensure that long-term care providers and the needs of older adults are being considered by lawmakers is to contribute to LeadingAge NY's Political Action Committee (PAC)! Now that election season has ended and new legislators will assume office at the beginning of the new year, it is time to build up our PAC so we can continue to build upon our relationships with members of the State Legislature.

By contributing to the LeadingAge NY PAC, you play a direct role in shaping policies that impact the quality of care and services available to older adults and individuals with disabilities. The PAC provides an opportunity for leaders, staff, board members, and volunteers to support our advocacy and the development of critical legislative relationships. To help bolster our Albany advocacy efforts, we invite you to make personal donations to our PAC!

Donations can be made via this linkPlease review the above-linked flyer for additional information and/or share the flyer with your organization’s board members to help us supercharge our PAC! Your donations will enable us to form connections with newly elected officials, continue our advocacy work, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults across NYS. Please note: Federal law strictly prohibits not-for-profit entities from involvement in political campaigns. Donations must be made from individuals’ personal accounts.

To learn more about what LeadingAge NY and the LeadingAge NY PAC do for our members, check out our 2023 Accomplishments! In addition, LeadingAge NY recently issued our 2024 Legislative Bill Summary, marking the end of this year's state legislative activity and recounting several advocacy victories.

Thank you for your unwavering support, care, and commitment to the well-being of older adults in your communities. Your contributions ensure that the voices of aging New Yorkers and long-term care providers are heard by legislators loud and clear!
